Mardi Gras Lunch KC Style

The second I spied shrimp and grits on the menu, I knew we'd found the perfect Fat Tuesday spot.
Beignet is a little restaurant nestled into the northwest corner the KC River Market. It's specialty is Cajun and Creole food and it's one of the only places you can get a true taste of New Orleans in KC.

With an eclectic style and tight quarters, Beignet is a cozy and charming spot perfect for a quick bite at lunch or a casual date night. There are really only two tables in the restaurant (each probably seat eight or so) plus a couple Victorian chairs tucked into a little nook on the north wall.
The place was bursting at the seams with people but the line moved really quickly! We'd reviewed the menu before getting there and ended up ordering the Southern 7-Cheese Grits with shrimp, sweet potato fires, a shrimp po' boy, and an order of three traditional beignets. I figure if a place is named after a menu item, that's the one thing you absolutely have to get!
After ordering, we got a little pager to take with us while we looked for a place to eat and shopped a bit in Carollo's Gourmet Italian Grocery next door. We ended up finding a little two-top picnic table out front of the restaurant and settled in to feast! It was a little chilly and the day that we went, but in front of the River Market shops and restaurants there's a covered area with tables that makes sitting outside bearable even in February. Our pager buzzed before long and then it was time to dig in.
Everything that we ordered was delicious. The shrimp and grits were cheesy and well seasoned, the sweet potato fries were crisped up to perfection (and served with some crazy delicious creamy dipping sauce, and the po' boy was practically gone before I could get a bite!
Honestly, if I could only have one kind of french fry for the rest of my life, these would be my pick. They were so delicious.
As for the beignets, if you're into deep fried, powdered sugar covered pillows of happiness then you'll probably already know that these things are incredible. They're basically fancy funnel cake that's easier to eat. Plus, Beignet has lots of different filling options both sweet and savory so you could essentially make a full meal out of beignets alone. You're welcome.
